*Commonly referred to in China as liquid methionine is methionine hydroxyl analogue, a liquid source of supplemental methionine.

Market analysis

After surging for almost 8% over the previous two weeks, methionine prices softened of late. As the prices of broiler continued to slide, poultry feed producers limited output while holding back purchases of methionine with inventories sufficient. Hence, even as renminbi continued to weaken, distributors and traders gave discounts in efforts to promote sales.

Nonetheless, liquid methionine prices, which have remained flat during early November, rose prominently as sellers adjusted prices accordingly to sustain profits.

In Europe, prices of methionine for Q4 deliveries stayed at EUR2.53-2.56/kg. Price quotes for large-scale clients were in the range of EUR2.48-2.50/kg.

Market forecast

Demand for methionine is expected to stay soft with the poultry markets underperforming and piglet feed consumption limited. However, distributors and traders will stand firm as the costs of imported methionine have increased substantially.
