More companies are looking into new ways of growing corn due to demands for corn in deep processing and animal husbandry in China.
Still, the gap between supply and demand for corn is widening.
Despite consecutive years of increasing corn output, China has not been able to boost corn import which peaked at a record level of 5.5 million tons in 2011-2012. To strike a balance between import and own production, Chinese companies are investing more resources in new farming technologies which promise a stable and safe production. In this October, a lab field in Jilin province produced 1,168.78 kilogramme of corn per mu (1 mu = 1/6 acre), breaking the historic record.
All over China, there are about 3,500 such plots of high-yield corn. As China has planted 525 million mu (1mu=1/6acre) of corn this year, the total output is expected to break 200 million tonnes, an increase of 3% from last year.
