Philippine hog weekly: Farmgate hog prices continue to plummet (week ended Nov 14, 2011)

An eFeedLink Exclusive

Price summary

Prices of Philippine farmgate hogs continue to drop over the week, fuelling concerns by hog producers that production may be in for a downtrend this year.

Although four provinces have posted gains, prices have dropped or remained steady.

Producers have not yet issued statement on the continuous decline of prices but have earlier declared that economic concerns and imports have been blamed for the price drop.

Traders foresee no price improvement until December as hog farmers are still selling their hogs at a cheaper price to challenge the cheaper meat imports that continue to flood the market.

Market Analysis

Despite efforts by the government to contain meat smuggling and sale of botcha (double dead or contaminated meat), these illicit commodities still abound in wet markets.

Hog producers have long complained these age-old problems and there seemed to be no resolve in these quandaries.

Swine farmers fear that this Christmas season would be a bleak one since prices have not significantly picked up.

Earlier, the government has declared that there would be no meat importation until the end of 2011 to protect the farmers who have been reeling from cheaper foreign meat. However, the illegal trade of meat is notorious especially when the holiday season nears as meat processors and consumers patronise cheaper meat. Traders say these illicit activities would definitely affect swine performance for 2011.
