Philippine hog weekly: Farmgate hog prices remain unchanged (week ended Nov 7, 2011)

An eFeedLink Exclusive

Price summary

Prices of Philippine farmgate hogs have remained unchanged over the week, prompting farmers to worry on poor sales and production.

Usually prices peak at this time due to burgeoning demand. However, even retailers confirm that sales have been poor, fuelling suspicion that smuggled meat already abound in the markets. The sale of double dead meat or botcha was also blamed for dismal prices.

Observers believe that prices may not improve as expected in the coming weeks but may see a slight rise when December comes in.

Market Analysis

Pork producers fear that production for this year will not be as good as expected as prices remain stagnant although the Christmas holidays are approaching.

Swine farmers are blaming the abundance of cheaper imports that pulled down demand for local hogs. Some however believe that hog farmers deliberately did not increase prices to prevent the government from importing. The government earlier declared the possibility of importation in the last quarter of 2011 should supply of poultry and hogs become scarce.  Nevertheless, pork producers are hoping that pork prices will improve in December to somehow salvage the industry, which has been struggling for the past two years due to diseases and cheaper imports.
