Global markets

In Europe, methionine supplies were relatively tight with spot prices at Euro4.70-4.85/kg. Producers had not released their price quotes for 2009.

Market analysis

Methionine prices in China were lower as hog and layer feed demand remained weak. However, the price fall was relatively small as broiler feed demand showed signs of improvement.

Overall, feed millers remained cautious as crude oil prices plummeted amid gloomy global economic outlook.

Market forecast

With general consumption, including meat intake, on a slowdown, feed demand and thus methionine requirements will remain sluggish. China's methionine prices are unlikely to firm up for a long time to come.

*Commonly referred to in China as liquid methionine is methionine hydroxyl analogue, a liquid source of supplemental methionine
