India to resume exports after being declared free from bird flu

India has been declared free from bird flu by the France-based World Organization of Animal Health, or OIE, a poultry industry executive said Tuesday (November 20, 2007).

"We plan to resume exports of poultry in about a week's time. Shipments are being readied at ports," said a senior executive with Venkataeshwara Hatcheries, one of India's largest exporter by volume for poultry products.

India was hit with bird flu in February last year but declared free from the disease in August 2006.

It was detected again in July this year in a small pocket of northeast India.
