Norway's herring export rise by 149 percent

 

 

Norway's exports of whole frozen herring rose by 149 percent year-on-year to US$68.3 million in October 2007,while exports of frozen herring fillet also rose by 101 percent to US$24 million, as reported by the Norwegain Seafood Export Council (NSEC).

 

A total 70,000 tonnes of frozen whole herring was exported, up from 43,000 tonnes. Exports of frozen fillet products rose to 20,000 tonnes, up by 12,000 tonnes.

 

Russia imported 46,000 tonnes of Norwegian frozen whole herring, an increase of 257 percent. Ukraine's imports also grew by 172 percent to 18,000 tonnes, NSEC analyst Kristin Lien said.

 

Norway's exports of frozen herring fillet to Russia doubled to 8,000 tonnes, while exports to Ukraine surged eight-fold to 3,000 tonnes.

 

Exports of frozen mackerel, however, fell 8.0 percent to US$97.8 million. A total 51,000 tonnes were exported, down by 7 percent.

 

Exports to the main market, Japan, fell by 11 percent to 21,000 tonnes, and exports to China decreased to 5,000 tonnes.

 

Exports to Russia rose by 13 percent to 9,000 tonnes and exports to Ukraine escalated to 5,000 tonnes. Prices of frozen whole mackerel somewhat decreased over the period, Lien said.
