Vietnam tightens shrimp disease control measures

Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is calling for agencies to improve quality management of agricultural materials for aquaculture, including more stringent inspection of whole production chain in veterinary drugs trading facilities to ensure fish and shrimp quality.

In early 2013, shrimp farmers reduced farming area due to disease and unfavourable weather. Since June 2013, farmers have extended farming area and achieved high productivity due to higher raw shrimp price. Until October 2013, disease-affected farming area of the country was down 46.4% on-year.

Through October 2013, shrimp stocking area hit over 650,000 hectares nationwide, thus completing the yearly plan. During this time, farmers harvested over 396,900 tonnes, increasing 38% on-year.

The Directorate of Fisheries expects black tiger shrimps output to reach 340,000 tonnes in 2014, on a farming area of 615,000 hectares. Meanwhile, whiteleg shrimp output may rose 20-30% on-year to reach 230,000 tonnes, on an area of 60,000 hectares.
