Quantities of Welsh cattle and pigs rises in 2010

The amount of cattle and pigs has increased in Wales, according to provisional results for the June 2010 Welsh agricultural survey.

This year's total number of cattle and calves has risen by 1% from 1,130,000 to 1,138,000, the increase largely due to slightly more non-dairy females.

The number of dairy females over two years old was unchanged at 274,000, but dairy breed females between one and two years old rose by 12% to 60,000.

The pig herd has risen by 21% to 27,000, compared with 22,000 in 2009, and poultry numbers increased by 4% to 7,571,000.

The area down-to-wheat increased by 24% to 24,000 hectares. The number of principal farmers, spouses, and partners remained unchanged at 44,000 although there was a slight shift from full-time to part-time classification.
