Adisseo's Rovabio® Excel gets EU approval for use in sows

Rovabio® Excel, Adisseo's non starch polysaccharide (NSP) enzyme, has been approved by the EU for use in sows from one week before farrowing to weaning.

Applying Rovabio® Excel in lactating sows diets leads to a decreased loss of body weight, backfat and better feed intake during lactation. With an estimated return on investment between 20:1 to 40:1, depending on swine prices, the enzyme is a valuable tool for the swine industry, constantly operating with tight profit margins.

A meta-analysis was conducted, involving six trials, and 640 sows at various university locations around the world.

The meta-analysis demonstrated an average reduction of 3kg (more than 20%) of body weight loss of sows receiving a standard diet with Rovabio® Excel across a range of environmental and housing conditions, diet formulations and breeds.

Similar results were obtained in high NSP diets (ie. wheat, barley) and low NSP diets (ie. corn).

Body weight loss of sows during lactation is a key indicator used to anticipate the impact on subsequent sow prolificity, longevity and length of weaning to estrus interval.

A trial performed at the Prairie Swine Center, Canada, with lactating sows confirmed the interest of using an NSP enzyme in the lactating sow's diet. There was a reduction in weight loss during lactation (-1.7kg) and backfat loss after weaning (-0.5mm).

The positive effect was more vital on first parity, which would be expected to have a beneficial impact on future reproductive performance of sows and productive longevity in herds.

The results are due to two mechanisms: First, Rovabio® Excel leads to better digestibility of main raw materials in the diet. Second, the enzyme improves feed intake during the lactation period (+7kg).

As a result of these two benefits on sow nutrition, individual weight of piglets and litter weight at weaning are both increased when sows receive a diet with Rovabio® Excel, 6.47kg versus 6.23kg, and 67.3kg versus 62.3kg, respectively.

For nutritionists dealing with higher nutritional requirements of hyper prolific sows with a limited feed intake capacity, Rovabio® appears to be a helpful tool for the formulation of consistent higher energy diets for lactating sows.

Furthermore, if an increase of 240g of piglet weight at weaning (as obtained in the Prairie Swine Center trial) would lead to an extra body weight at slaughter between 0.6kg to 1.0kg, equivalent to 0.5kg to 0.8kg of carcass weight in field conditions, then the calculated benefit of using Rovabio® would range between US$18.82 to US$35.13 per sow yearly, on the basis of French results (G3T/GTE 2013), and 23 pigs produced per year, with a swine price of US$1.63 to US$1.88/kg.

With a cost of use of only US$0.94/sow yearly for producers, this single advantage leads to an estimated return on investment between 20:1 to 40:1.

According to Adisseo, Rovabio® is the only enzyme available on the market with a recommended single dosage for all diets. The enzyme is also approved for all poultry, piglets (weaned) and fattening pigs.
