Denmark's pig count down 5.3% in October 2010

According to the Danish Agriculture and Food Council, the headcount for Danish pigs fell 5.3% in October 2010, with output to suffer continuously in 2011.

The drop comes in comparison to totals recorded the corresponding month of 2009. As of October 1, 2010, there were 12 million pigs in Denmark, down from 12.7 million in October 2009.

The Danish Agriculture and Food Council claims that a dip of 5.3% is equivalent to a loss of 2,500 jobs in the pig farming industry. The dip will also impact production in 2011, which will presumably lead to far fewer export revenues than the DKK27 billion (EUR3.62 billion; US$4.92 billion) generated in 2009.
