Kenya Imposes 7% Tax on Milk Imports

Kenya's Livestock and Fisheries minister, Joseph Munyao, has imposed a 7% duty on all imported milk.

In a gazette notice, Munyao says importers shall pay the duty after all expenses that include freight and insurance are added.

The tax will be paid to the Kenya Dairy Board (KDB) and will used to provide services to the struggling industry, according to the minister.

"A person who imports milk or any other dairy produce shall pay to the board a levy of 7% of gross costs," says Munyao.

The bold move is meant to protect the industry that is now recovering from years of competition from cheap imports.
