Waitrose initiates new pig feed scheme

British supermarket giant Waitrose has announced a new grain sourcing initiative for its pig farmers.

The deal, said to be the first of its kind in the UK, will have British Quality Pigs/Dalehead Foods sourcing its wheat and barley through cooperative Openfield, from within a 80-km radius of the mill used to manufacture pig feed.

It is hoped that the reduced transport needs will improve the carbon footprint of the pork produced, and strengthen Waitrose’s partnership with British farmers.

Waitrose is the only major UK retailer to source all of its pork from RSPCA Freedom Foods-accredited British pigs.
