Beijing Huadu Broiler builds poultry facility ready for 2008 Olympic
Beijing Huadu Broiler Company is building new poultry facilities in the outskirts of the capital and is scheduled to operate by the 2008 Olympic Games.
The company is reported to be a showcase of government food quality inspectors and the Games organisers in a public relations exercise to calm concerns of the safety of China's produce ahead of the Games.
Vice-minister of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), Wei Chuan Zhong, said the agency has been taking measures to ensure food security for the Games.
Plans include electronic tags, emergency responses, random checks and anti-biological terrorism against threats that may disrupt the food supply chain for the estimated 10,000 athletes coming for the games.
Beijing Huadu Broiler started in 1982 and is the first integrated chicken breeding and processing plant in Beijing, processing up to 36 million birds annually, with the bulk sold as fresh meat.
