US researchers determine effects of DDGS on hog growth

Feeding dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) to nursery and grower-finisher hogs had variable effects on growth performance, according to studies conducted by the Kansas State University.

Researchers conducted 3 experiments on more than 2,000 pigs fed on 0, 10, 20 or 30 percent DDGS over varying periods from one to two months.

The results suggest that DDGS can be included in the diet of commercial and finishing pigs at 10-15 percent with no effect on performance.

Another part of the study involving a study on nursery pigs fed 10 percent DDGS for 22 days found that they had become 1.5 pounds lighter, meaning hog producers would be making losses if they fed DDGS to nursery pigs.
