Vietnam, SEA's seafood powerhouse

The continual increase in seafood exports and production has propelled Vietnam as among the world's leading trader in seafood and a new seafood power in South East Asia together with Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines, according to Meryl J Williams, Australia International Agricultural Research Centre's chief.

In the publication of the Australia-based Lowy Policy Research Institute dated November 7 this year, Williams wrote that with such a high growth rate, Vietnam became the biggest seafood processor in South East Asia and stood at the third position in the world in 2004 after India and China.

In 2001, Vietnam's fishery exports were US$1.8 billion and the figure increased to US$2.6 billion in 2006.
