UK confirms banning of battery hen cages by 2012

UK Minister for Sustainable Food and Farming and Animal Health announced the definite banning of battery hen cages by 2012.

Compassion in World Farming chief executive Philip Lymbery said that this has been a monumental decision and  will get 20 million UK birds from battery cages every year.

Lymbery added that British consumers prefer free-range eggs over those from caged hens.

Egg industry players however, said that the banning would likely be delayed up to 10 years.
