Bulgaria's 2012 corn harvest down 25% due to unfavourable weather

Due to long winter that was followed by crop-killing droughts, Bulgaria's 2012 corn harvest reached 1.64 million tonnes, down by 25% compared to 2011, in line with expectations for lower yields.

According to preliminary data of the agriculture ministry, sunflower crop was also lower than last year's - 1.36 million tonnes compared to 1.4 million tonnes in 2011. Earlier this year, the ministry cut the wheat crop forecast as well by 15%. Agricultural products are a main export item for Bulgaria with around 17% share in total exports.
