Livestock import ban affecting Uganda local dairy

Farm-Africa's CEO, Dr Christie Peacock, has urged the Uganda government to lift a ban on livestock imports from Britain to enable farmers secure breeding stocks and boost the livestock industry in the country.

Kenya and other EU countries have already lifted the ban and Uganda should follow suit, said Peacock. This would enable Ugandans better access to breeding stocks, and meet the current increasing demand for livestock products.

The government of Uganda imposed a ban on importation of live cattle, semen, beef and dairy products from Britain in 1996 following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

Bright Rwamirama, state minister for animal industry said the ban would be lifted cautiously as the government was not prepared to handle the disease outbreak.
