Bird flu, AH1N1 strike South Korea
Health authorities in South Korea are now scrambling on the resurgence of bird flu while AH1N1 flu scare continues.
A low pathogenic avian influenza virus was discovered in excrement of migratory birds in a reservoir in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province.
The worst-case scenario is that patients infected with the AH1N1 virus could additionally contract bird flu, leading to a mutation that gives rise to a new supervirus.
But that didn't necessarily mean a new form of virus would be formed when the bird flu virus appeared amid the spread of AH1N1 virus, said a health official.
The outbreaks have prompted officials to vaccinate 40,000 fowl breeders earlier instead of December as originally planned.
