EU pig production continue to stall in the global market
Danish Meat Association (DMA) has projected that the EU pig sector will continue to stall amongst global competitors due to its intolerance to genetically modified mixed feed.
Trade Director of DMA, Knud Buhl, said at the yearly congress of the livestock and meat producers that the world market will grow immensely but the Europeans will hardly profit.
One of the main reasons for this is the cost barrier brought about by the intolerance for genetically modified feed. US on the other hand has been able to increase its pigmeat exports to 1.4 million tonnes in comparison to EU's 1.3million tonnes.
EU's tariff barriers, according to Buhl, also need to be reduced to make investments in the meat sectors attractive to other countries. Buhl pointed that bilateral agreements in the Asian markets has not been profitable to the EU in general.
