US approves camelina meal for cattle feed
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the inclusion of omega-3-rich camelina meal in cattle feed, providing the potential for omega-3-rich beef for consumer consumption.
The FDA allows up to 10 percent of camelina in cattle feed.
Camelina now has access to a huge market, as the US and Canada have 10.5 million head of cattle.
Camelina meal is not only a good source for omega-3 fatty acids and energy, it is also high in protein and vitamin E, which when combined together could benefit cattle weight gain.
