India egg prices seen to increase

Egg prices in India are expected to rise in the coming weeks, with increases already seen in some areas.

Egg demand in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Northern States had increased sharply, said National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) Namakkal Zone president P. Selvaraj.

Egg prices in other markets including Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkatta had increased sharply following a rise in demand, prompting poultry farmers and traders in Namakkal to send their eggs to Northern States.

An egg now costs Rs2.75 (US$0.06), while the NECC also increased the price of layer birds to Rs35 (US$0.75) per kg on Saturday (Nov 7).
