Peru seafood exports decline in Jan-Sep
Peruvian traditional and non-traditional seafood exports registered US$1.79 billion between January and September 2009, 8-percent less than in the same period of 2008, the Exporters Association (ADEX) indicated.
Shipments of traditional seafood resources overseas totalled US$1.39 billion.
Fishmeal was the main export in first nine months of 2009, with shipments valued at US$1,189 million; whereas the sale of fat and fish oils generated US$203 million.
Non-traditional seafood exports rose to US$402 million, that is, 16-percent less than in the same period of last year.
According to reports, the main categories exported are molluscs, worth US$175 million; and fish, worth US$156 million.
Similarly, the export of crustaceans overseas tallied US$49 million, and other marine species and products totaled US$19 million between January and September of this year.
In other news, ADEX express worry over strikes carried out in several port terminals around the country.
According to ADEX head Jose Luis Silva Martinot, in the port of Callao the strike was almost total, to the point that workers blocked the entry of cargo-laden trucks.
