Alaska's 2007 salmon haul 8 percent higher than 2006

Fishermen in Alaska harvested 212 million salmon worth an estimated US$374 million for the 2007 season, 8 percent higher than that seen in 2006, according to preliminary end-of-season estimates from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Division.

The preliminary 2007 statewide total ex-vessel value of the 2007 salmon harvest was nearly US$28 million higher than that in 2006, and significantly higher than the most recent 10-year average of US$277 million, the department reported.

This is believed to be the fourth largest harvest since Alaska achieved statehood.

The preliminary estimate usually underestimates the final value of the commercial salmon harvest.

The catch was also about 33 million fish more than previously expected, and above the most recent 10-year average of 164 million fish.
