Philippine hog weekly: Farmgate hog prices remain steady (week ended Oct 31, 2011)

An eFeedLink Exclusive

Price summary

Prices of Philippine farmgate hogs have remained steady over the week despite the fact that Christmas season is already approaching.

Unlike in previous years where prices of farmgate hogs are already soaring during this period due to surge in demand for the holidays, prices have remained steady, prompting hog farmers to worry.  At the most, prices have only jumped to PHP3 a kilo this week.

Nevertheless, traders believe that prices will still improve in the coming weeks as consumers are already gearing up for the holiday season.

Market Analysis

Pork producers believe that stagnant prices are due to rampant smuggling as well as the selling of botcha or double dead meat. Smuggled and double dead meat is cheaper but perilous to health as these were un-hygienically handled.

It has been reported that some backyard farms have already closed due to uncontrolled smuggling and selling of botcha in the markets. Commercial scale meat processors are allegedly using botcha in their meat products.

Farmers have urged the government to aggressively stop these unscrupulous activities as their business is being affected. They warned that more farms will shut down - which can worsen the agricultural economy - if the authorities immediately fail to resolve these problems.
