Ukraine grain export slows down in October; further fall seen

Ukraine exported in October about 2 million tonnes of grain, compared with 2.8 million tonnes in September, and a further fall in export is expected, the agriculture ministry said Thursday (November 6).

The ministry said there was a limited number of grain export contracts for November and practically no export contracts for December and January.

According to the agriculture ministry's earlier reports, Ukraine's grain export in July-September was about 6.3 million tonnes which, including the 2 million tonnes exported in October, gives the total export figure in July-October of about 8.3 million tonnes.

The agriculture ministry said earlier Ukraine planned to export 13 million tonnes of grain before the end of this year and a total of 22 million tonnes in the whole of the 2008-2009 marketing year.

In the 2007-2008 marketing year Ukraine only exported 3.6 million tonnes of grain because of a low harvest and restrictions on export imposed by the government.

The ministry expects grain harvest this year at 51 million tonnes in clean weight compared with 29.3 million tonnes in 2007.
