Delhi to build first pig abattoir for 2010 Games

India's New Delhi plans to build its first pig abattoir to meet an expected spike in demand from tourists coming for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, local media reported Monday (Nov 6).

The most popular meats in India are mutton and chicken since pork and beef have been avoided by the country's Muslims and Hindus respectively.

While the selling of beef is banned in the majority-Hindu country, the selling of pork is allowed. However, the city does not have a licensed abattoir for slaughtering of pigs as most do so in their own homes.
