China enlarges pork export to ASEAN

From January to October, China's Hunan province exported 1,320 tonnes of meat to ASEAN countries at a value of US$6.7 million.

Hunan has first exported 10 tonnes of chilled pork valued at US$47,800 to Malaysia after the establishment of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area. In the same period, the province resumed chilled pork export to Singapore and it first entered the market of the Philippines in April.

Hunan is a major live pig breeding and exporting base in China, which can output more than 6,000 live pigs every year. Hong Kong, Macau and ASEAN countries are the main destinations for Hunan pigs. Hunan pork has once occupied 90% of the market in Singapore, but the business has faded due to management problems of Hunan livestock enterprises.

Since 2009, Hunan has built more industry bases for pork exporting enterprises. The government has also strictly controlled the quality of pork by strengthening facility maintenance and laboratory testing.

The pork exported to Malaysia are processed by Hunan Provincial Yiyang Meat Joint Processing Factory which has passed the official assessment of Department of Veterinary Services of Malaysia, and become the first registered Chinese pork processor in the country. The enterprise has exported an aggregate 935.3 tonnes of chilled pork to Malaysia at US$3.66 million after registration.
