Lower UK 2008-09 wheat output sees surplus fall on year

UK 2008-09 wheat production is estimated at 14.18 million tonnes, down 18 percent on the year, according to figures published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Thursday (Nov 5).

As a result, the exportable wheat surplus is estimated at 2.16 million tonnes, down 800,000 tonnes on the year.

"The significant increase in wheat opening stocks is not expected to offset the decrease in both production and imports, thus total availability is estimated lower than last season," the report said.

However, barley stocks are expected to rise sharply to 2.01 million tonnes, from 810,000 tonnes the previous year, due to production rising 10 percent on the year to 6.7 million tonnes in 2008-09, the report said.
