More than half of Danish pork producers to be part timers by 2017

The number of pig producers in Denmark could fall by two-thirds, to be replaced by part-time producers by 2017, according to Orla Pedersen, director of the research organisation Danish Pig Production (DSP).

The current 4,500 full-time producers would fall to just 1,500 by 2017, she said. The numbers would be augmented by 2,000-3,000 part times she added.

Pedersen was speaking at last week's annual DSP congress, which remained optimistic for 2008.

Pedersen suggested that producers should maybe consider increasing production of finished slaughter pigs, while reducing their weaner output. Adhering to an old-fashioned strategy will protect livelihoods, she said.

Full-time producers would rely on "networking electronically with fellow producers and specialists regarding strategies and risk-evaluation', she predicted.

Chairman of Danske Slagterier, the Danish industry organisation for pig producers, Bent Lassen predicted a good second half for 2008 as pigmeat prices rise.

An increase in the number of cull sows in the next few months in Europe would lead the push to higher prices later, he said.
