India urges local meat sector to improve safety standards

India's government has asked the meat processing sector to raise safety standards of products to prevent international companies from grabbing a large portion of the domestic market.

Foreign companies will enter the market and hamper the business of the domestic meat processing industry if quality standards are not met, said Processing Minister Subodh Kant Sahai.

The minister said the meat sector has a huge potential for growth as 93 percent of the business comes at the moment from the unorganised sector that is still in its developing stages.
