Elanco's pig feed additive approved for higher dosage
Elanco Canada has received approval for its pig feed additive Paylean to be used at a higher dose.
Paylean was already approved for doses of five parts per million (ppm) to improve weight gain and feed effiency, and 10 ppm for increased carcass leanness and dressing percent. The new approval allows Paylean to be given to pigs at rates between five and 10 ppm.
For Canadian producers, this means fewer days to market, an increase in carcass weight of lightweight pigs and an increase in kilogrammes of pork sold in a fixed number of pig spaces, said Elanco swine veterinarian Dr. Isabelle Moreau.
Improvement in feed to gain means less feed per kilogramme of pork produced, which contributes to cost savings and reduced environmental impact of pork production, she said.
Paylean is approved in the US, Canada, Mexico, most South American and Asian countries, Australia and South Africa.
