China's Jilin Province To Produce More Corn In 2003

Corn output in Jilin, China's top corn-producing province, is expected to be higher this year compared with last year, possibly reaching the second or third highest level ever, according to a report from the official Xinhua news agency Wednesday.

Grain output in Jilin is pegged around 23 million tons this year, said the report, quoting Hong Hu, Jilin's governor.

The report didn't say how much corn output will be this year, out of the total grain output. Jilin's main grains include corn and rice.

Jilin's grain production in 2002 was 22.148 million tons, including 15.4 million tons of corn, according to official data from the National Bureau of Statistics.

As of end-September 2003, grain stocks in Jilin were pegged at 31.075 million tons, Xinhua said, citing a figure from the Jilin Provincial Grain Bureau.
