Marel appoints new CEO and chairman

Marel has appointed Arni Oddur Thordarson as the company's new CEO with immediate effect.

Thordarson will replace Theo Hoen who joined Marel and Stork Food Systems in 1986 and was CEO since early 2009.

The appointment also brought about changes within Marel's board of directors. Asthildur Otharsdottir will become the new chairman of the board while Arnar Thor Masson was elected vice chairman.

Thordarson, who served on the board of directors in Marel since 2005 and was previously the chairman of the board, had played a critical role in shaping the company's strategy during his eight years as CEO, said Otharsdottir.

Possessing an extensive international business experience within the industrial sector, Thordarson was previously the head of corporate finance and capital markets at Bunadarbanki Islands. He went on to co-found international investment company, Eyrir Invest, and has been serving as its CEO since its inception in 2000. He is also a board member of Stork Technical Services and Fokker Technologies.

Thordarson holds a Masters of Business Administration degree from IMD Business School, Switzerland, and a Cand.Oecon degree in business administration from the University of Iceland.
