Total area under summer-sown oilseeds fell to 17.5 million hectares, from 18.4 million hectares last year, it said.

The trade body also said total vegetable oil imports in the marketing year ended October 31 is estimated at 8.67 million tonnes, sharply up from 6.35 million tonnes last year.

Total edible oil imports in 2008-09 are likely to be at 8.2 million tonnes, while non-edible oil imports are likely at 450,000 tonnes.
