Brazilian legislator defends soda tainted milk
Brazil's Federal Deputy Paulo Piau on Wednesday (November 1, 2007) defended two diaries accused of producing soda-tainted milk at the Chamber of Deputies.
The Federal Prosecution Office issued a report on Monday, stating that the additives found in milk produced by Casmil and Coopervale endangered people's health.
The dairies' UHT milk has since been removed from supermarket shelves.
Brazil's Chamber of Deputies is the equivalent of the lower house of Congress.
Piau, in defending the diaries, said soda is present as well in soda.
Brazilian milk cannot be compared to that produced in first world countries," he said. "It is the milk that Brazil has"
Milk produced by the two dairies, Casmil and Coopervale, has been found containing hydrogen peroxide and caustic soda, which acts as a preservative and hides signs of poor storage, transportation and hygiene.
Casmil and Coopervale are based in Minas Gerais state, where Piau is based.
Piau reportedly drank the milk and cheese products from the dairies at the session, while offering some to his peers.
