Canadian pork now 'extra lean'

Canadian pork is now classified as 'extra lean', containing less than 7.5 percent fat including all trimmed pork cuts (except ribs), according to a Health Check programme of the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation

The statement was found on two fact sheets of the programme which served as general food guides.

The results were published following a nutrient analysis conducted in 2006,

The study also revealed that an average serving of raw trimmed pork contains just 2.7 grammes of fat.

New feeding techniques and increased trimming accounted for the leaner pork, according to the Manitoba Pork Council.
