Algeria's Jan-Sep 2012 wheat imports drop 31.6% on-year

In the first nine months of 2012, Algeria's wheat imports dropped by 31.6% on-year to US$1.49 billion on the back of a 20% on-year decline in the imported volumes to 4.6 million tonnes.

This is according to Algeria Press Service report citing figures from the National Centre for Informatics and Statistics (CNIS).

Specifically, the country imported 3.5 million tonnes of soft wheat for US$1.03 billion, while durum wheat imports fell to 1.09 million tonnes with the value decreasing to US$460.4 million compared to January-September 2011. Overall, lower wheat imports are attributed to a good grain harvest this year, which is expected to reach 56 million quintals during the 2011-12 season. Algeria's annual demand for grains, including corn and soy, is estimated at 80 million quintals.
