New Zealand bans export of livestock due to animal mistreatment
New Zealand has imposed a ban on the export of live animals until a legislative review into the trade can be completed.
The ban comes after reports of mistreatment and mishandling of livestock during shipment and slaughter overseas.
New Zealand exports live sheep and cattle to markets such as China, Mexico and South America. The country has not shipped live sheep to the Middle East in years.
The ban was welcomed by New Zealand's Veterinary Association, which is urging new legislation to protect the nation's reputation and animal welfare.
Australia last year investigated alleged mistreatment of its livestock sold to the Middle East.
