Philippine Feed Weekly: Feed prices still unchanged amid typhoon onslaught (week ended Oct 6, 2011)

An eFeedLink exclusive

Price summary

Prices of feed grains were relatively stable over the week, except for fishmeal which posted significant losses of PHP4. This was despite the devastation brought by twin typhoons Pedring (international name Nesat) and Quiel (Nalgae) which hit the country two weeks ago.

Agricultural losses are set to reach a record PHP2 billion (US$46.10 million).

Observers say prices may see a little improvement in the coming weeks as the weather starts to improve.

Market Analysis

Prices of feed grains are likely to jump in the coming weeks as analysts foresee an increase for wheat, soy and corn, according to forecasts by traders.

According to the Chicago Board of Trade, the grains are set to increase by US$0.10 to US$0.20 a bushel this week, as EU countries reached agreements on ways to weather the debt crisis, and as demand from China surges.

In the US, the world's largest exporter of agricultural commodities, pressure from the grain harvest is also gathering momentum.

Feed grain producers are concerned about corn supplies, which are feared to have been affected by the two cyclones. The government is still assessing the damages brought by twin typhoons, and is expected to implement measures to fill a possible supply gap, to minimize the impact on meat production as Christmas season nears.
