Brazilian state receives certification of origin for shrimp

Shrimp from the Brazilian state of Ceará will be the first in the world to obtain certification of origin, which will add value and allow for an increase in market value by 20% compared to the current.

In addition, this award will open doors to new markets abroad. The certification of the crustacean was welcomed by the producers of the 32 farms grouped in the Association of Shrimp Farmers in Costa Negra (ACCN) and the authorities of the Institute of Industrial Property (INPI).

According to ACCN's CFO Francisco Mardônio de Oliveira, the certification poses a great significance not only for shrimp farming activity but also for the state of Ceará. For the label, Black Coast farms had to improve the mode of production with respect to environmental aspects, he added.

Of the 30,000 tonnes of shrimp that is expected to be produced in Ceará this year, about 8,000 tonnes will come from the municipalities of Itarema, Acaraú, Cruz y Jijoca de Jericoacoara, which comprise the Costa Negra, detailed Mardônio de Oliveira.

de Oliveira indicated that only 10% of shrimp produced in state farms is marketed locally, reports Diario do Nordeste. He noted that the biggest market is the national one, and the majority of production goes to the South and Southeast

Statistics from the Development Agency of the State of Ceará (ADEC) shows that Ceará ranks second in production of shrimp in the country, second only to Rio Grande do Norte.
