US officials to ask India to accept its dairy products
A long-standing trade barrier between the US and India might be removed by a request from dairy state New York, Senator Charles Schumer's office said Monday (Oct 26).
US Trade Representative (USTR) Ron Kirk had promised to press Indian trade officials to open their market to American dairy exports, which had been banned since 2006, Schumer, D-N.Y., said on Monday (Oct26).
Securing a commitment from the USTR to work with Indian officials on this issue was the first step to re-opening the massive and profitable Indian dairy market to US dairy products, Schumer said.
Eliminating the ban would provide great opportunities for dairy product manufacturers, Schumer added.
New York is the third largest exporter of dairy products in the country and exported more than US$332 million in dairy products in 2008.
