Brunei eyes Singapore poultry market
Brunei's Agriculture Department is positive domestic poultry producers will be able to export their products to Singapore next year, possibly under the country's Brunei Halal brand.
To be able to supply poultry products to Singapore, Brunei would need to boost its production, according to Dr Dabeding Hj Dullah, assistant director of the Department.
Representatives from the department have been negotiating with Singapore's Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA), which regulates meat imports, he said.
Singapore wants to see an improvement in Brunei's biosecurity measure thus the Department is trying to engage a consultant for that, he said.
A consultant to look into the pricing of local products and the logistics of exporting to Singapore has been hired, and the consultant has started negotiating with an importer in Singapore, Dabeding said.
He said they are eyeing Singapore because the city-state does not produce poultry products and are heavily dependent on imports from Malaysia, South America and Europe.
Singapore is looking at alternative sources and Brunei wants to seize this opportunity, he added.
