Turkey's farmers hit by rising feed prices

The Turkish market is showing little sign of stabilising as the impact of rising global grain prices hits the country.

NFU poultry adviser Kelly Watson said a survey by the union showed feed prices alone have increased by 20% this year and markets remained volatile, with little sign of stabilising.

"Wheat and protein prices add up to about 60% of the total cost of production for egg and poultry meat producers and the current feed prices are simply eroding their profits. And while feed is the predominant factor, other costs such as labour, packaging and energy costs have also increased this year," she said.

NFU Cymru poultry group chairman Tony Burgess said producers had to market their turkeys more effectively to remain competitive against the major retailers.

"It's time we championed what we produce and we therefore have to market our end products more effectively. Our poultry products are reared on traditional local farms where achieving high levels of animal health and welfare standards is extremely important to us as Welsh producers. As Christmas approaches, I really encourage the general public to buy Welsh turkeys from local farms to support producers throughout Wales," said Mr Burgess.
