Australian Senate may investigate BSE beef import changes

The Senate is considering an inquiry into the relaxation of meat import rules protecting Australia from bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad cow disease.

Australia's blanket ban on beef imports from countries with previous outbreaks of the disease will be lifted after the Cattle Council asked for the change.

That has led to concerns and criticisms that the reputation of Australia's industry is at stake.

Independent Senator Nick Xenophon said most beef producers would oppose the change as they are concerned about the implications and the decision has been made without proper consultation.

That is why a Senate inquiry is needed to get to the bottom of the matter very quickly, he added.

The Cattle Council of Australia is standing by its support for the change.

Executive director David Inall said the council's position has been consistent since 2005 and has the support of most producers.
