China's Heilongjiang establishes major pig breeding centre

China's Senyu Livestock Company and Canada's Polar Genetics had jointly set up a major pig breeding farm in Jiamusi, Heilongjiang province. This project forms part of the plans by Jiamusi city government to invite foreign participation in the development of its local economy.

In an agreement signed by both companies in December 2005, Senyu will provide the land and oversee the construction of the farm while the Canadian company will supply 600 breeder pigs upon completion of the farm.

Construction of this project, which cost RMB24.7 million in total investment, began in May 2006. The entire site sits on 300,000 m2 of land and the constructed buildings will have 15,000 m2 of floor area.

Hailed as one of the biggest and most technologically advanced pig breeding centres in Heilongjiang, the superior pig breeding stocks delivered by Polar Genetics will include the Duroc, Large White (Yorkshire) and Landrace. When production begins, which is expected soon, this centre will be able to produce 5,000 heads of superior breeder pigs and 7,000 heads of commercial hog stocks annually.
