Vietnam's corn imports up almost two-fold

As of October 15, Vietnam's corn imports nearly doubled to US$433.54 million worth of 1.43 million tonnes of goods.

The figure represented on-year rises of 97.4% in value and 81.1% in volume, the General Department of Vietnam Customs said on its website last week.

In the first half of this month, the country imported 132,700 tonnes worth US$37.47 million, compared with 110,291 tonnes valued US$32.83 million in the same period last month.

India, Argentina, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and the US were the main suppliers during the period.

Vietnam produces around 4.6 million tonnes of corn every year, far from the country's demand for human consumption and animal feeding.

In 2011, the country imported 972,254 tonnes worth US$326.93 million, the customs said.
