Kyrgyzstan Jan-Aug US poultry, pork imports up on-year
Kyrgyzstan imported in 24,700 tonnes of pork and 24,399 tonnes of poultry from the US in the first eight months of the year, the agriculture ministry said Thursday (October 22).
That compares with 22,299 tonnes of poultry and no pork imports in the corresponding period of 2008, it said.
Imports from the US accounted for 65 percent of Kyrgyzstan's total meat imports in the period.
The agriculture ministry said meat imports were increasing because the country produced little meat of its own, and domestically produced meat was more expensive than the imported meat.
