US red meat production similar to last year's figures
Red meat production for September has fallen 7.3 percent from August levels but remain more or less the same as last year's figures, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Production for September totaled 3.933 billion pounds, compared to 4.245 billion in August and 3.930 billion for September 2005.
Red meat production has increased 4 percent when the first nine months of this year are compared with that last year, increasing from 33.9 billion pounds to 35.2 billion pounds this year.
Commercial beef production for September fell 11 percent from August but was similar to last September's figures. September beef production was reported at 2.162 billion pounds, compared to 2.442 billion the month prior and 2.158 billion a year ago.
Total beef production for the first nine months of the year is 19.585 billion pounds or 6 percent higher than last year while slaughter was down 12 percent from August but similar to September 2005. The year to date total is 4 percent more than a year ago.
The average live weight of 1,282 pounds was seven pounds higher than both last month and last year.
Commercial pork production during September 2006 came out at 1.744 billion pounds, compared to 1.774 billion for August and 1.743 billion in September 2005.
Pork production for the first nine months of the year is up 2 percent from the same period last year at 15.391 billion pounds.
Slaughter was 9 percent less than the month before but near steady with last year.
For the first nine months of the year, the slaughter total is 1 percent higher than a year ago while the average live weight of 269 pounds for the first nine months of the year is up 1 from the same period last year.
